Freely ye have received

Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils. Freely ye have received; freely give. Matthew 10:8

I realize that many churches, especially those starting out, can’t afford all that much in the way of webhosting. I also realize that there are many out there just learning how to do a webpage and don’t want to plunk down that much money until you’ve got your act together. And while the dot.com bust has killed-off alot of free services, there are still several places where you can get wet with a web presence for little or no money down.

Keep in mind, you get what you pay for, and in the case of free website hosts, sometimes you get more than you bargained for. Also keep in mind, there is a big difference between a free domain name, and a free website/hosting. So please, please, please, read the fine print before accepting ANY user end user/legal agreement (EULA) …

For example, go to Google and type in “free church web hosting” and what you’ll get are several links to site that indeed give you a free website … for the recurring monthly cost &/or set-up fees for hosting the site on their server . Then there are others who give you a free site, but charge $9.95 per service call/request … both instances are a bit disingeniune if you ask me … and reminds me of the advice of our Lord offers in Matthew 10:16Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves“.

That said, I did a little poking about. Here are just a few places I found that might help you along. Keep in mind, none of these replace the features, services and security you get with a web hosting service. Moreover, many of the sites below have page restrictions and or include their own advertising on your site. Like I said, you get what you pay for. That said, an in no particular order …

DISCLAIMER - I have not hosted on any of these services. Nor should the list above be considered an endorsement of any of the sites mentioned. I have placed them here as links to examples ONLY. If you use them, it is up to you to understand the devil in the details and the terms of agreement for each of the aforementioned services …. I know, I know … don’t you just hate our overly litigious society?

I have spent most of the last two days searching for a new hosting provider, one that offers professional services, not necesarily a Christian company, but at least a company that does not also host pornography. The company I will probably end up with is HarveyHosting.com. I am impressed with their offerings, since they are definitely up there in the professional category (real space, real features, real bandwidth). And they have free accounts, which, at least at first glance, leave most free church internet providers in the dust. They do expect a level of knowledge - not for the beginner.

Just wanted to let you know - as I think they should be on anyone’s free list. I do not work for them - actually I haven’t even signed up yet….
Thanks,

John
